Sunday School Palm Sunday Lesson

I teach a Kindergarten-3rd grade Sunday School class, which happens to be all girls this year!  We are a small church and very low tech.  Our classes are a full hour, so we have quite a bit of time together.  I'm always on the lookout for different ideas, so I thought I'd share what we do on here for others to incorporate if they're interested!  We have been using Joyful Life's Sunday School curriculum, and then I toss in other crafts or follow up activities.

For Palm Sunday, we did our regular lesson of Jesus riding into Jerusalem on the donkey, and I grabbed a coloring sheet online.  Then we added one snipped artificial "palm branch" to our picture and a couple pieces of felt for the coats on the ground.

We talked about our King coming again!  What would we do if the King was coming to our town or to our house?  We settled on cleaning up, decorating, and hosting a party to welcome our Savior!  So... that's just what we did!  I recorded a video of our "getting ready" process and put it to this song: Behold Our God - [Official Lyric Video] - YouTube.  These are pictures I pulled from our video:

One of the girls' favorite additions to our room are a couple of old donated telephones!  We tend to think of them as ancient and obsolete, but the girls want to use them all the time!  They took turns calling each other with the exciting news that Jesus is coming!

Then they got to work sweeping, cleaning the chalkboard, changing out our winter tablecloth (yes, we still had snowmen out- our area gets snow for a long time 😂), blowing up balloons, and arranging artificial flowers. With all of our crafting and spills, we kept with plastic party tablecloths, but we made them look a little fancier.  The flowers were originally from Dollar Tree, but stick around!  You'll notice that we reuse our materials as much as we can!

We made a Welcome Jesus banner!  It was free to design here: Pink Floral Printable Banner - Chicfetti (Don't you love the freebies shared on Pinterest?)  I laminated the letters to protect them from moisture because our class is in the basement.  We used twine and the little bitty clothespins from Dollar General.

They hung balloons.  One little girl was pretty excited that she learned how to tie balloons that week!

We had our own palm branches that the girls placed on the door and on our chalkboard.  We glued pretty verses to them, which I grabbed from here: 40 Essential Scripture Passages in a Pretty Free Printable - Plus Some Tips on Memorizing Bible Verses — Reformed Mama   They had wonderful options to use that fit perfectly with the green palm branch theme.  Here are several:

Some of the balloons are gone, but we still have the main decorations in place.  I think the girls enjoy seeing their work when they come each week, and they loved making the classroom feel just a little bit more special!

The following week was our Easter party to celebrate our Savior!  I'll post that next time!
